As livestream shopping continues to gain steam in e-commerce, and specifically within the collectibles world, Whatnot’s 2024 report reveals a number of significant data points for the collectibles market.
The platform reported its buyers spent 80 minutes on average per day watching live streams, with 1 billion chat interactions between buyers and sellers.
Diving deeper, three athletes appear to have made major strides in 2024.
Searches for Paul Skenes leapt over 230,000%, Caitlin Clark saw her demand spike more than 2,400% and Victor Wembanyama saw a 770% increase in search volume.
Additionally, WNBA searches increased 870% year-over-year while demand for autographed WNBA cards doubled.
Likely thanks to the release of Topps Chrome Tennis, demand for tennis cards surged over 200%. Golf collectibles ticked up more than 30%.
In the footwear category, the platform saw celebrity collaborations as Nike’s biggest driver, with a 200% increase in demand for Travis Scott’s sneakers. Hoka increased its demand more than 150%, while On Cloud’s interest climbed more than 120%.
Vintage clothing searches increased more than 55%.
Trading Card Games have been as dominant as ever in the hobby this year and it shows in Whatnot’s data. Graded Pokémon cards searches rose over 255%, Magic: The Gathering demand doubled and Star Wars, Marvel TCG others enjoyed similarly significant growth.
In the toy category, limited-edition LEGO sets grew more than 150% in search volume, including specialized mini-figure series such as Harry Potter and DC Heroes, which gained over 130%.
Coins saw similarly large jumps in demand, with gold coins up more than 160% and 1 ounce silver coins over 400%. Ancient coins were led by searches of up to a 500% increase for Other World coins.
