A 1984 Certificate of Registration, which was issued to Tom Cruise for his work in England during the preproduction of Ridley Scott's film "Legend," sold Saturday for $13,288.

The employment booklet had extra appeal because it featured an early picture of Cruise, and he signed it in his given name Thomas C. Maypother IV.

Although Cruise had already legally changed his name to Tom Cruise by May 1981 to make a more Hollywood convenient name and to distance himself from his estranged father, Cruise for some reason went back to his past when he signed this document.

Cruise gained fame the year before in 1983 with "Risky Business," and although "Legend" actually lost money, Cruise was back to being one of Hollywood's most bankable actors with the 1986 film "Top Gun."

The consignor of the item told the auction house the booklet was originally given by Cruise to a crew member on that film.
