A collector paid $2.4 million for a $10 coin this weekend at Heritage Auctions.

The 1907 Rolled Edge Indian Eagle is one of the most coveted and rare coins in the world. Although some 31,000 were made, only 50 reached the public.

This coin, one of two proof specimens certified by grader NGC, previously sold in 2011 for $2.18 million.

It was one of 23 coins that sold for more than $100,000 in Heritage’s U.S. Signature Coins Auction. The oldest American coin sold was an oak tree two pence, struck by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1662, which sold for $72,000.

The all-time record for a coin is the $18.9 million paid for the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in 2021. The coin was never circulated because Franklin D. Roosevelt didn’t want to use gold in the midst of the Great Depression.

Most of the few that leaked out over the years were seized by the U.S. government.
