The original artwork used on the cover of Marvel Spotlight No. 32, which introduced Spider-Woman in 1977, has hit the auction block, with bidding exceeding $370,000 (including buyer’s premium) with three weeks remaining at Heritage Auctions.

Created by Archie Goodwin, who served as Marvel’s editor-in-chief from 1976-77, Spider-Woman (aka Jessica Drew) was originally intended to be a one-off character simply to establish the trademark for the name, but after the comic sold well, writer Marv Wolfman was tasked with bringing the character to a longer-running series.

CGC has graded 5,778 copies of Marvel Spotlight No. 32, with 256 examples receiving a CGC 9.8 grade. Over the last year, CGC 9.8 copies sold more than 100 times for an average of $1,540.

Comic book art has seen a surge in popularity and price among collectors recently, with highlights including a $1.02 million sale of the original cover art for “The Amazing Spider-Man” No. 194 in January 2025, a $860,000 result for “The New Mutants” No. 98 in November 2024 and a $840,000 sale for “Black Cat Comics” No. 50 in June 2024.
