Tony Gwynn's 1991 Gold Glove award sold for $62,000 at the Realest on Sunday night, narrowly missing the modern record for baseball's fielding trophy at auction.
That record belongs to the price paid for Ozzie Smith's 50th anniversary All-Time Gold Glove trophy, which was bought for $65,048 in 2012.
The Gwynn sale, with items consigned by the estate of the San Diego Padres legend, was the second part of an auction selling the gear of the eight-time National League batting champion, who died in 2014.
The other highlight was the sale of Gwynn's Silver Bat from his magical 1994 season, which sold for $52,000. Gwynn, who won eight Silver Bats by leading the NL in batting average for eight seasons, batted .394 in 1994 before the strike cut his quest to become the first player to hit .400 since Ted Williams accomplished the feat in 1941.
The Gwynn family previously sold duplicates of the Silver Bats that Gwynn had made for display purposes. The 1994 duplicate sold for $11,400 in 2016.
