The Cleveland Browns announced Tuesday rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will wear No. 12 when rookie minicamp begins Friday.
This number is subject to change, but certainly comes as a surprise.
Sanders wore No. 2 throughout his college career, and his number has now been retired by the Colorado Buffaloes. On top of that, Sanders has an apparel line titled "2Legendary", and all items on his website were sold out after he was selected in the fifth round April 26.
Despite being picked 144th overall, when many predicted Sanders as a first-round selection, Sanders ranked as the No. 1 seller on Fanatics and its network of shops (including the NFL Shop and the Cleveland Browns' official shop) among all draft picks of last week, the company confirmed to cllct.
No. 2 is also the number his Hall of Famer father, Deion, wore throughout his college career at Florida State before transitioning to No. 21 in the NFL.
Before Tuesday morning, No. 2 appeared to be available. No one on the Browns official roster was assigned No. 2, but according to a social media post from the team announcing numbers for new additions, journeyman wide receiver DeAndre Carter will wear No. 2 to begin minicamp.
Carter has bounced around the league, playing for six franchises during his seven-year career. Most recently, Carter played for the Chicago Bears, where he had nine catches for 72 yards during Caleb Williams' rookie campaign last season. The Sacramento State product served mostly as a return specialist for Chicago, as he has throughout his career.
The 32-year-old receiver has worn eight different numbers in his time in the NFL. He has never worn No. 2.
