Originally graded a BGS 10 Black Label — meaning the card secured perfect 10 scores for all four sub-grades — the Reshiram ex 174 Japanese White Flare was removed from its holder and sent to the edge of space, protected by only Dragon Shield sleeves, as part of a marketing campaign touting the quality of the company’s products.
The card was then resubmitted to Beckett where it earned a BGS 10 Black Label for a second time.
Dragon Shield and Beckett Grading Services are both owned by parent company Collēctīvus Holdings.
According to Dragon Shield, the card was sent to the edge of space before later returning to Earth at more than 200 mph. It was exposed to rain, wind and temperatures as low as minus-94 degrees Fahrenheit.
As of Thursday afternoon, bidding had reached $7,500, including buyer’s premium, at Heritage Auctions. Bidding ends Wednesday with proceeds from the sale benefiting The Toy Foundation.
As part of the campaign, Dragon Shield released a limited-edition set of protective sleeves identical to those used during the launch titled “Dragons in Space.”
